# Create an API key

> Only Sitecore Cloud Portal team members with the [necessary roles](https://doc.sitecore.com/cdp/en/users/sitecore-cdp/developer-center/api-keys/managing-roles-in-sitecore-cloud-portal.html "Managing roles in Sitecore Cloud Portal") can create API keys.

API keys allow a developer to authorize the API requests they make to Sitecore CDP REST APIs.

To create an API key:

1. On the navigation menu, click **Developer Center** > **API keys**. The **API Keys** screen displays.
2. Click **Create**. The **New API key** screen displays.
3. Complete the following fields:
    - **Name** - Enter a name for the API key.
    - **Features** - Select the feature that the API key is for.
4. Click **Save**.

5. Copy the API key and the API secret because you won't be able to view them again in Sitecore CDP. The developer will use the API key and the API secret to [request an access token](https://doc.sitecore.com/cdp/en/developers/api/en/request-an-access-token.html). After the developer retrieves the access token, they can start using those Sitecore CDP REST APIs that require authorization.
