# Create a taxonomy

To use a taxonomy, you [add a **Select** field to the content type](https://doc.sitecore.com/ch-one/en/users/content-hub-one/content-modeling/manage-taxonomies/manage-content-type-fields.md "Manage content type fields") and associate this field with a taxonomy. This lets the content author select taxonomy values to associate with each content item.

In the following example, the content type on the left includes a **Select** field called *Amenities*, which is associated with the taxonomy *Amenities*. When the content author creates a content item using this type, the **Select** field lets them choose values from a list.

> It is a good idea to plan how you are going to use taxonomies in your content model in advance to avoid having to retag content.

To create a taxonomy:

1. On the menu bar, click **Content model** > **Taxonomies**.
2. On the **Taxonomies** page, click ![plus-chone.png](https://doc.sitecore.com/api/markdown-image/ch-one/en/users/content-hub-one/images/plus-chone.png) **Create taxonomy**.
3. In the **Create taxonomy** dialog, enter a name for the taxonomy. By default, the **ID** is created using the name. Optionally, enter a different ID if required.
4. Click **Continue**.
5. On the taxonomy details page, in the **Name** field, enter a name for the taxonomy value. By default, the **ID** is created using the name.
6. Optionally, enter a different ID if required.
7. Click **Add** or press Enter.
8. Repeat steps 5 to 8 to add additional taxonomy values.
9. When you have finished entering the taxonomy values, click **Save**.
