# Add a state

> [!note]
> To configure Content Hub, you must either be a superuser or have the necessary permissions granted to you through [user group policies](https://doc.sitecore.com/ch/en/users/content-hub/user-group-policies.html "User group policies").

A state flow is a collection of states, together with the transitions that let users move content from one state to another.

To add a state:

1. On the menu bar, click **Manage** :mdiCogOutline:.
2. On the **Manage** page, click **State flows**.
3. On the **State flows** page, click the desired state flow.
4. On the state flow detail page, on the **States** tab, click :mdiPlus: **State**.
5. In the **State** dialog box, fill in the following fields.

    | Field name | Description | Mandatory |
    | --- | --- | --- |
    | **Name** | The name of the state. | Yes |
    | **Description** | A description of the state. | No |
    | **Update assignees** | Actions available to [state flow assignees](https://doc.sitecore.com/ch/en/users/content-hub/state-flow-assignees.html) while interacting with this state. | Yes |
    | **Assigned users** | Users assigned to interact with content items that are in this state. Enter names manually, or click :mdiPlus: to select them from a list. | No |
    | **Assigned user groups** | User groups assigned to interact with content items that are in this state. Enter names manually, or click :mdiPlus: to select them from a list. | No |
    | **Assignees (dynamic)** | Choose which [role](https://doc.sitecore.com/ch/en/users/content-hub/dynamic-assignees.html) users are automatically assigned. | No |
    | **Assignee groups (dynamic)** | Choose which [role](https://doc.sitecore.com/ch/en/users/content-hub/dynamic-assignees.html) user groups are automatically assigned. | No |
    | **Behavior configuration fields** | The fields that appear here depend on your configuration. They let you select a strategy to determine what happens to the values of entities that transition into this state:<br><br><ul><li>*Keep* - no changes are made to this entity value.</li><li>*Clean* - the value of this entity is deleted.</li><li>*Replace all with* - sets the new specified value. This lets you switch to a different work flow.</li><li>*Add to existing* - adds the specified values to the entity.</li><li>*Find and remove* - removes the specified values from the entity.</li></ul> | Yes |

    > [!important]
    > - Avoid using [static assignment relations](https://doc.sitecore.com/ch/en/users/content-hub/state-flow-assignees.html "State flow assignees") in scripts that enable dynamic relations. We instead recommend creating dedicated relations, and ensuring that **Allow navigation** is set to **true**.
    >
    > - Do not use the *Add to existing* option if the cardinality of a specific member doesn't allow multiple values (for instance, *OneToMany* relations such as *AssetType*) as it will return an error upon transition. Use the *Replace all with* option instead.
    >
    > - The *Add to existing* and *Find and remove* transition options are applicable to assigned users, assigned users groups, and any other user-related field configured in your schema. However, these options aren't applicable to dynamic assignees.

6. Optionally, you can change the order in which states are displayed by clicking the sort drop-down list and choosing one of the following options.

    | Name | Description |
    | --- | --- |
    | *Name* | Sorts the states alphabetically, by name. |
    | *Date created* | Sorts the states in the order they were created, starting with the earliest. |
    | *Sequence number* | Sorts the states according to the order they are executed in the flow, starting with the first. |

7. Click **Save**.

> [!note]
> To add a parallel or sequential approval to a state, you need [add a state flow transition](https://doc.sitecore.com/ch/en/users/content-hub/add-a-state-flow-transition.html "Add a state flow transition") (with **Conditional transition** enabled) to the state.
