# Add and filter budget line items

You create a budget at the project level for either a [basic project](https://doc.sitecore.com/ch/en/users/content-hub/build-a-budget.html "Build a budget") or for a stage in a [multi-stage project](https://doc.sitecore.com/ch/en/users/content-hub/multi-stage-projects.html "Multi-stage projects").

> You can customize budget line items by modifying the associated option list. To do so, you must have the necessary permissions.

To add a new budget line:

1. On the menu bar, click **Project** > **Projects**.
2. On the **Projects** page, click a project to open the project details page.
3. Do one of the following:
    - For a basic project, on the project details page, click the **Budget** tab.
    - For a multistage project, on the **Timeline** tab, click a stage in the project, and then click the **Budget** tab.
4. Click **\+ Line item**.
5. In the **Line item** dialog, define the following properties as required for the new budget line.

    | Property | Valid values | Mandatory |
    | --- | --- | --- |
    | **Item type** | *None*, *Budget*, or *Cost*. | Yes |
    | **Confidence** | *None*, *Actual*, or *Estimate*. | Yes |
    | **Sub type** | *None*, *Expense*, *Fixed*, or *Time*. | No |
    | **Amount** | Valid amounts must be a decimal value. | Yes |
    | **Currency** | Valid currencies determined by the defined option list. | Yes |
    | **Cost center** | Valid cost centers are determined by the defined option list. |  |
    | **Cost type** | Valid cost types are determined by the defined option list. | No |
    | **Expense type** | Valid expense types are determined by the defined option list. | No |

6. Click **Save**.

> Use the filters to narrow down the budget line items displayed. Default filters include **Item type**, **Confidence**, **Sub type**, and **Currency**.
