# Create a taxonomy

> [!note]
> To configure Content Hub, you must either be a superuser or have the necessary permissions granted to you through [user group policies](https://doc.sitecore.com/ch/en/users/content-hub/user-group-policies.html "User group policies").

A taxonomy is used to classify data. It is useful when you are organizing assets for use with filters or you need to add security. For example, you can use taxonomies to organize assets by brand name so that when users search for an asset, they can filter the search by brand name. Taxonomies can have many hierarchical values represented as a tree structure.

> [!important]
> When you delete a taxonomy that consists of parent/child entities (through self relations), the child entities are deleted when the parent is deleted.

> [!tip]
> If you are unsure whether to use a taxonomy or an option list, see our [Taxonomies and option lists](https://doc.sitecore.com/ch/en/users/content-hub/taxonomies-and-option-lists.html "Taxonomies and option lists") best practices.

To create a taxonomy:

1. On the menu bar, click **Manage** :mdiCogOutline:.
2. On the **Manage** page, click **Taxonomy**.
3. On the **Taxonomy** page, click **New taxonomy**.
4. In the **New taxonomy** dialog, fill out the following fields:

    | Field | Description |
    | --- | --- |
    | **Name** | The name of the taxonomy. |
    | **Allow manual sorting** | Lets you manually sort taxonomy items. |
    | **Label** | The UI label for the taxonomy. From the list, select a language and then enter the label. |

5. Click **Create**.

You can now [add items to the taxonomy](https://doc.sitecore.com/ch/en/users/content-hub/add-values-to-a-taxonomy.html "Add values to a taxonomy").

> [!warning]
> *Master* is a reserved internal label. Do not use it as the taxonomy identifier. For example, using *Creation.Master* or *CMP.Creation.Master* results in an error. You can, however, use it in combinations such as *DMCreation.TypeMaster* or *CMP.MasterCreation*.
