# Mass edit assets using an existing asset or template

You can update the fields in multiple assets based on the values from another asset or a [template](https://doc.sitecore.com/ch/en/users/content-hub/create-an-asset-template.html "Create an asset template"). For each field, you can specify whether the [mass edit](https://doc.sitecore.com/ch/en/users/content-hub/mass-edit.html "Mass edit") replaces the existing value, appends new values, or leaves the existing value unchanged. You can also [manually mass edit assets](https://doc.sitecore.com/ch/en/users/content-hub/manually-mass-edit-assets.html "Manually mass edit assets").

> [!note]
> **Before you begin**
> - Make sure the metadata fields in the source match those in the selected assets.

> [!warning]
> If the mass edit source contains a one-to-one relation, the mass edit job will fail for all the assets except the first one in the list, because a one-to-one relation cannot apply to more than one asset.

To mass edit assets using an existing asset or template:

1. On the menu bar, click **Assets**.
2. On the **Assets** page, [select the assets](https://doc.sitecore.com/ch/en/users/content-hub/select-entities.html "Select entities") you want to edit.
3. Click **Actions** :mdiDotsHorizontal: > :mdiPencil: **Edit**.
4. Click the **From asset** tab or the **From template** tab, depending on the source type you want to use.
5. Click :mdiPlus: **Add**, select an asset or a template, and click **OK**.
6. To edit field values, click **Edit** :mdiPencil:, and edit the fields with the values you want to apply across all selected assets.
7. For each field, from the list next to it, select one of the following actions:
    - **None** - does not modify the value or change the property of the field.
    - **Replace** - overwrites the current value of the field.
    - **Append** - adds information to a field, or adds taxonomy items to a list of related items.
    - **Clear** - removes all items from a relation or removes the current value of a field.
    - **Remove** - removes items from a relation.

Which actions are available depends on the property type and how [mass edits are configured](https://doc.sitecore.com/ch/en/users/content-hub/settings.html "Settings").

8. Click **Apply**.

> [!note]
> Applying a mass edit creates a mass edit job. You can follow the progress of the job on your [**Background processes**](https://doc.sitecore.com/ch/en/users/content-hub/view-background-process-logs.html "View background process logs") page.
