# Portal assets

A portal asset is a special type of asset that is not stored in the digital asset management system. This type of asset is generally used as a graphic page element, such as on an editorial page or as a background image for a tile. The images used in the **What's new** component are examples of portal assets. These portal assets have their own set of renditions.
