# Watermarking

A watermarking is a text or image laid over an asset. You can apply a watermark to any image or PDF asset, helping to prevent its unauthorized use. By default, a watermark includes the name of the asset, the username of the person viewing it, a timestamp for when it was accessed, some custom text, and a background image.

To use watermarks, you must:

- [Enable a rendition for watermarking](https://doc.sitecore.com/ch/en/users/content-hub/enable-a-rendition-for-watermarking.html "Enable a rendition for watermarking")
- [Configure a suitable watermark](https://doc.sitecore.com/ch/en/users/content-hub/configure-a-watermark.html "Configure a watermark")
- [Set up watermark permissions](https://doc.sitecore.com/ch/en/users/content-hub/set-up-watermark-permissions.html "Set up watermark permissions")

The watermarking feature does not support:

- *Original* renditions, other than those of images and PDF documents. Other renditions are fully supported, including *Preview*.
- Multiple watermarks for a single rendition.
- Public links.
