Configure the Preference Center


Using the Preference Center, customers can opt in or out of email campaigns.

The Preference Center allows a contact to opt in or out of one or more marketing categories for a specific manager root. A contact's marketing category preferences can be used for segmentation (for example, to create segmented lists) or as conditions within Marketing Automation. Styling and content can be different for each manager root.

Sample EXM templates include hyperlinks in the footer of the email message that allow customers to join related email campaigns or opt out of selected campaigns. These are found in the Content Editor at: /sitecore/templates/Branches/System/Email/Messages/One-Column Message/$name/Message Root/Footer  and /sitecore/templates/Branches/System/Email/Messages/Two-Column Message/$name/Message Root/Footer.

When a customer clicks a hyperlink the Email Preference Center opens.


When a contact selects I do not want to receive any emails from Sitecore. Unsubscribe me from all and clicks Update Subscriptions, the contact is added to the global opt-out list for the manager root associated with the preference center.

When a contact selects any number of marketing categories and clicks Update Subscriptions, the following occurs:

  • The contact is removed from the global opt-out list for the associated manager root.

  • The ExmKeyBehaviorCache facet on the contact is updated. For each marketing category the following is specified:

    • Marketing category id

    • Manager root id

    • Preference

    • Timestamp


The rule where the contact has (not) subscribed to marketing preference for the manager root allows you to take advantage of the marketing category preferences selected by a contact. This rule makes it possible to segment on specific marketing category preferences for specific manager roots in cases where the contact has subscribed or unsubscribed.

Edit Preference Center options

Using the Preference Center, customers can opt in or out of email campaigns.

To configure Preference Center options:

  1. On the Sitecore Launchpad, click Content Editor.

  2. In the Content Editor, in the tree view, select the manager root that you want to define Preference Center options for.

  3. On the Content tab, in the following sections, make the relevant updates:

    • Branding - specify the brand name and logo.

    • Marketing Categories - specify the marketing category groups to display in the Preference Center. Marketing categories are created and maintained in the Marketing Control Panel for a specific manager root.

    • Preference Center - define the content and layout of the Preference Center for a specific manager root.
