Using the environment picker

Current version: 9.0

With Sitecore XC Business Tools, business users have the ability to manage multiple catalogs and related data sets. Depending on your commerce solution implementation, these data sets can reside within the same environment, or can be divided into distinct environments. The Commerce solution comes with two sample data sets, the Habitat and the AdventureWorks catalogs and related inventory data sets. By default, each sample data set belongs to its own Commerce environments. The Business Tools graphical user interface provides a configurable environment picker that lets you choose which data set to manage.

As part of the default configuration, the Business Tools also lets you chose to work in the authoring environment or in the shops environment. The authoring environment is where you perform all management activities related to catalog entities (and related inventory data), including unpublished versions. The shops environment is suitable only for viewing the published version of catalog entities.

Note

You must always use the authoring environment to manage your Commerce data in the Business Tools. Managing catalogs, sellable items, inventory or any other type of Commerce entities in a shops environment might result in unexpected behavior.

In the default Commerce solution deployment, the Business Tools environment picker provides the following options, which reflect the sample data sets and environments provided out-of-the-box:

  • HabitatAuthoring

  • HabitatShops

  • AdventureWorksAuthoring

  • AdventureWorksShops

The configuration of your own Commerce solution determines the selection that is presented in the Business Tools environment picker.
