Allocate traffic and assign to variants of an interactive experiment with universal assignment

Sitecore Personalize lets you control the flow of guest traffic into an experiment running a classic A/B test by allocating traffic and assigning it to variants. With the Universal assignment method, these are determined using buckets. By default, Sitecore Personalize allocates all 120 buckets, or 100% of traffic, to the experiment, but you can adjust the range to fit your experiment's requirements. After you've allocated traffic, you can distribute it among variants by assigning a bucket range to each one.

Important

We recommend that you familiarize yourself with both the Unique and Universal assignment methods, as they offer different approaches for allocating traffic and assigning it to variants.

To allocate traffic and assign to variants:

  1. In the Experiment options pane, in the Statistical engine section, click the Classic option to select a classic A/B test.

The Experiment options pane lets you select the statistical engine and assignment method, and edit the traffic allocation.
    Note

Selecting the Optimized option activates optimized testing, which prevents you from selecting the Unique and Universal assignment methods or adjusting how you allocate traffic. This option will automatically allocate 100% of the traffic to your experiment, and dynamically assign guests to the highest performing variants.

  2. In the Assignment method section, click the Universal option, then in the Traffic allocation section, click Edit icon.

  3. In the Control traffic allocation pane, drag each end of the slider to define the range of buckets that you want to include in the experiment. For example, selecting buckets 1 to 60 ensures that guests within this bucket range will enter the experiment, and excludes guests in buckets 61 to 120.

    Note

A diagram below the slider displays which buckets are selected or allocated to the experiment (purple squares) and which are shared with other experiments using the Universal assignment method (striped squares).

  4. In the Universal assignment overview section, you can see how your experiment's traffic allocation overlaps with other experiments set up with universal assignment. An Venn diagram icon icon next to the name of an experiment indicates that it shares buckets with the experiment you are currently setting up.

  5. Click Save.

  6. On the experiment builder, in the API Response section, click Edit icon next to the percentage of any of the variants.

  7. In the Assign traffic to variants pane, enter the percentage of traffic for each variant using whole, rounded percentages. As you specify these percentages, the system automatically calculates and displays the corresponding bucket ranges. Ensure the total percentage for all variants equals 100%.

The Assign traffic to variants pane is used to distribute the allocated traffic to experiment variants using bucket ranges.
  8. Optionally, to adjust the traffic assigned to variants, do the following:

    • To distribute the allocated traffic equally among variants, click Assign traffic equally to all variants.

    • To change the order of variants based on the assigned traffic percentages, click Reorder icon and drag the variant to your preferred value. The order of the percentages stay in place as you move the variant names.

  9. Click Save.
