# Installation

What you have to install to use the ASP.NET Core SDK depends on whether you have an ASP.NET Core front-end web app based on the [XM Cloud ASP.NET Core Starter Kit](https://github.com/Sitecore/xmcloud-starter-dotnet).

> [!note]
> **XM Cloud is now SitecoreAI**
> Some code examples, images, and UI labels may still use XM Cloud while engineering assets are being updated.

#### With starter kit

If you have an ASP.NET Core front-end web app based on the [XM Cloud ASP.NET Core Starter Kit.](https://github.com/Sitecore/xmcloud-starter-dotnet), your app already references the Sitecore ASP.NET Core SDK, with no separate installation required. You can now [start using the ASP.NET Core SDK](https://doc.sitecore.com/sai/en/developers/asp-net/0/asp-net-core-sdk/sitecore-asp-net-core-sdk.html#UUID-7656ff14-fba0-58d7-54a2-9a1ac0e64d7a_section-idm234486330395726 "Development tasks with the ASP.NET Core SDK").

#### Without starter kit

If you have an ASP.NET Core front-end web app *not* based on the ASP.NET Core starter kit, make sure you're [ready to start development](https://doc.sitecore.com/sai/en/developers/asp-net/0/asp-net-core-sdk/prerequisites.html "Prerequisites"). Then, depending on your project requirements, you can install any of the following ASP.NET Core SDK packages in your solution:

- `Sitecore.AspNetCore.SDK.ExperienceEditor` - lets you edit and preview content in SitecoreAI Pages while developing your app with the ASP.NET Core SDK.
- `Sitecore.AspNetCore.SDK.LayoutService.Client` - lets you retrieve layout data from Sitecore Experience Edge[^UUID-6d3bdb56-068f-19ce-e490-be85536320d3_N66c87126a7364].
- `Sitecore.AspNetCore.SDK.RenderingEngine` - enables your ASP.NET Core app to display SitecoreAI content.

After installing packages, you can [start using the ASP.NET Core SDK](https://doc.sitecore.com/sai/en/developers/asp-net/0/asp-net-core-sdk/sitecore-asp-net-core-sdk.html#UUID-7656ff14-fba0-58d7-54a2-9a1ac0e64d7a_section-idm234486330395726 "Development tasks with the ASP.NET Core SDK").

[^UUID-6d3bdb56-068f-19ce-e490-be85536320d3_N66c87126a7364]: *Experience Edge* is a service where SitecoreAI content, such as webpages, site layout, navigation, and other elements, are published. Experience Edge delivers this content to various channels, such as web apps, mobile apps, airport check-in kiosks, email, SMS, wearables, AI-enabled voice assistants, VR headsets, IoT devices, and more.
