# Configure base templates for a data template

A template inherits sections and fields from its [base templates](https://doc.sitecore.com/sai/en/developers/sitecoreai/content-modeling-and-presentation/data-templates/data-template-sections/base-templates.html "Base templates"). When there are several base templates associated with a data template, fields and sections from inherited templates are merged.

To configure the base templates for a data template:

1. In Content Editor, in the content tree, in **Templates**, select a data template.
2. On the **Content** tab, in the **Data** group, in the **Base Template** section, locate the **All** pane and the **Selected** pane.
3. In the **All** pane, double-click the base templates you want to configure for a data template. The base templates you double-click appear in the **Selected** pane.
   
   To remove a selected base template instead, double-click it in the **Selected** pane.
4. Click **Save**.
