# Edit an item

You can make temporary or permanent edits to all attributes and their values directly in Sitecore Search, except *source*, *locale*, or *ID*.

> You don't have to do this if the source used to create this document is an API push source.

To edit an existing item or index document:

1. On the menu bar, click **Content Collection**, then click **Content**.
2. To search for an index document, use the search bar. Then, click the item or document you want to edit.
3. Click **Edit** ![pencil_purple.png](https://doc.sitecore.com/api/markdown-image/search/en/users/search-user-guide/images/pencil_purple.png).
4. In the **Content Details** section, click **Edit**. This opens the **Edit Document Details** screen.
5. Edit the fields you want to change.

    > [!note]
    > You cannot edit an index document's source, locale, or ID.

6. Click **Save**.
7. In the **Save changes** dialog, click either **Temporary**, to allow changes to be overridden by the next indexing job or **Permanent** to make them permanent.
