Make your mailing list GDPR compliant

Abstract

Learn how to switch on opt in for your subscribers.

To adhere to GDPR, you can only send marketing emails with active, specific consent from your subscribers. You must make sure that both your existing and your new subscribers go through a double opt-in subscription process.

In digital marketing, the term Opt-in is used to express the permission given by customers or recipients on an email list, email or other direct message in order for you to send them merchandise, information or more messages. We call Opt-in settings the procedure that you choose to follow when adding a subscriber to your mailing list, depending on whether the member's confirmed consent is requested or not. You can select one of the following Opt-in types: Single Opt-in, Soft Double Opt-in, and Strong Double Opt-in.

To make your mailing list with existing users GDPR compliant, you can add opt-in settings.

To verify existing users on a mailing list:

  1. On your dashboard, click Audience and click Email lists.

  2. Click the email list that you would like to edit.

  3. In the menu on the left, click Set your settings.

  4. Navigate to the Opt-in settings section and select the opt-in checkbox:

    • Single opt in: no process is followed in order to ensure that the address belongs to whomever submitted it and no formal permission was given by the owner. Only use single opt-in registration when confirmed consent of an email's owner to receive messages is not requested.

    • Soft double opt-in: a confirmation email is sent to verify that the person the email address belongs to gives consent to receive messages. Activate Double Opt-in for this list but continue sending to all subscribers (Soft Double Opt-in) This option allows you to see all subscribers when clicking on the Members button. An extra column will show whether each subscriber is double opt-in Verified / Not Verified / Verified by Admin.

Double opt-in registration is when confirmed consent of an email's owner to receive messages is requested.

    • Strong double opt-in: emails are only send to verified subscribers. This option allows you to only see subscribers who are double opt-in verified when clicking on the Members button. Additionally, only verified double opt-in subscribers will be counted towards your billing (non-verified will be excluded). Subscribers not appearing as Verified can still be found using the search bar right above the members list.

  5. Next, you must set up the verification email that your subscribers will receive:

    • From: select the name that you want to display as the sender.

    • Subject line: enter the email title, for example, Confirm your subscription to mailing list.

    • Message: check the default confirmation message. You can edit the HTML message in our editor. Make sure that you include the #VerificationLink# tag.

  6. Click Save.

  7. Navigate to the Landing page URL field, enter the URL of your confirmation page and click Save.

All the new subscribers that clicked the verification link and gave you the consent will have the status Verified.

All the existing subscribers existing in a mailing list in your account can be segmented and you can start sending them campaigns asking them to re-subscribe through the Double Opt-in process.
