# Using automation

Sitecore Send lets you automate your communication with customers by identifying specific situations that trigger the sending of an email message. These automated emails can be [created from scratch](https://doc.sitecore.com/send/en/users/sitecore-send/using-automation/create-a-custom-automation.html "Create a custom automation") or [created using automation recipes](https://doc.sitecore.com/send/en/users/sitecore-send/using-automation/create-an-automation-from-a-recipe.html "Create an automation from a recipe").

You can, for example, use automation to:

- Inform, reward, and engage subscribers.
- Remind customers that they have abandoned their cart.
- Encourage customers to complete their purchases.
- Recommend a product.
- Customize order notifications.
- Follow up on purchases.
