Sitecore Experience Platform

Experience Manager

Abstract

Run Sitecore CMS without the Experience Database

Experience Manager (CMS-only mode) allows you to run Sitecore XP without the Experience Database (xDB) enabled or purchasing xDB licenses.

With Experience Manager, you can use Sitecore to create, manage, and publish content to your websites.

To run Experience Manager, you must have:

  • Sitecore XP 8.1 or later.

  • SQL server.

  • A server environment that has a content management and a content delivery server.

  • A valid Experience Manager Sitecore license.

Note

Experience Manager can also work in a single-instance configuration, when the instance acts as a content management and content delivery server.

Experience Manager installation options

There are two different options to install and run Experience Manager:

  1. Install using the XM single or the XM scaled packages.

  2. Install using the XP single or the XP scaled packages and then set the CMS-only configuration settings.

There are some differences in the features that can be run with Experience Manager, depending on how it has been installed. If you install using the XM packages, there are fewer features available compared to an installation using XP packages followed by CMS-only configuration.

Install using XM packages

The XM installation packages do not include some of the Sitecore Experience Platform components. The sections below describe the compatibility and limitations if you've installed using the XM packages.

Fully compatible

The following features can run Experience Manager without any changes:

  • Content editing in the Experience Editor and Content Editor

Compatible with limited functionality

The following features can run Experience Manager with limitations:

  • Device detection – The device database exists on the instance and it is possible to use the API for custom development. The personalization rules based on the device are not available.

  • IP Geolocation detection – The IP Geolocation service can be enabled using the API, but personalization rules are not available.

Incompatible

The following features are incompatible with Experience Manager if it has been installed using XM packages:

  • Experience Explorer

  • Campaign Creator

  • Commerce Connect

  • Personalization

  • Sitecore Forms

  • Content testing

  • Email Experience Manager

  • Experience Analytics

  • Experience Profile

  • List Manager

  • Path Analyzer

  • Segmentation

  • Federated Experience Manager

  • Marketing Automation

If you've installed using XP packages, to run Experience Manager only, you must set the Xdb.enabled configuration setting to false in the Sitecore.Xdb.config configuration file. For more information, see The CMS-only mode configuration settings.

When xDB.enabled is set to false, you do not have any access to the reporting or collection databases. Any functionality that depends on the xDB for data collection is not available and a number of applications in the Sitecore Experience Platform cannot run.

The sections below describe the compatibility and limitations if you've installed XM using the XP packages, and have then set the CMS-only configuration settings.

Fully compatible

The following features can run Experience Manager without any changes:

  • Content editing in the Experience Editor

  • Device detection

  • IP Geolocation detection

  • Experience Explorer

Compatible with limited functionality

The following features can run Experience Manager with limitations:

  • Campaign Creator – runs without analytics functionality.

  • Personalization – You can implement some in-session personalization rules, such as ones based on IP Geolocation, to provide personalized content to your contacts. You cannot, however, implement personalization rules based on historical data, like outcomes or past goals triggered, because the xDB stores that information.

  • Sitecore Forms – runs without analytics functionality.

Incompatible

The following features are incompatible with Experience Manager if it has been installed using XP packages followed by CMS-only configuration:

  • Content testing

  • Email Experience Manager

  • Experience Analytics

  • Experience Profile

  • List Manager

  • Path Analyzer

  • Segmentation

  • Federated Experience Manager

  • Marketing Automation
