# Rebuilding the xDB search index

The process for rebuilding the xDB search index currently depends on the search provider. You must rebuild the index if:

- The indexer goes offline for longer than the [change tracking retention period](https://doc.sitecore.com/xp/en/developers/103/sitecore-experience-platform/tracking-changes-to-the-xdb-index.html "Tracking changes to the xDB index")
