# Prepare for the installation or upgrade

This guide describes how to upgrade a Sitecore Identity Server Azure Kubernetes Service deployment from version 5.0 or later to version 9.0.

## Prerequisites

Before proceeding with the upgrade, ensure your deployment meets the following prerequisites:

- A Sitecore Azure Kubernetes Service deployment is already in place.
- The [Sitecore Container Deployment Package](https://developers.sitecore.com/downloads/Sitecore_Experience_Platform) matches your Sitecore version and topology.
- The [Sitecore Identity Server](https://developers.sitecore.com/downloads/Sitecore_Identity) deployment is lower than version 9.0.

## Prepare for the installation or upgrade

Back up the following data:

- Back up your security database
- Back up your current Identity Server configuration
- Back up your Kubernetes specification files
