# Add a field to a data template

A [data template field](https://doc.sitecore.com/xp/en/developers/105/sitecore-experience-manager/data-template-fields.html "Data template fields") defines the user interface control and other properties that influence how the field behaves in the Content Editor and Pages.

> When defining field names, you must make sure that they are unique, even between field sections. Both XSLT and .NET code use field names alone, without reference to sections, to extract content from fields.

To add a data template field to a data template:

1. In the Template Manager or the Content Editor, select the data template.
2. On the **Builder** tab, in the section where you want to create a field, click the field containing the text **Add a new field** and enter the name of the new data template field.
3. Click in the **Type** column and select a type for the new data template field.
4. On the ribbon, in the **Write** group, click **Save**.
