# Configure base templates for a data template

A template inherits sections and fields from its [base templates](https://doc.sitecore.com/xp/en/developers/105/sitecore-experience-manager/base-templates.html "Base templates"). When there are several base templates associated with a data template, fields and sections from inherited templates are merged.

To configure the base templates for a data template:

1. In the Template Manager or the Content Editor, select a data template.
2. On the **Builder OPTIONS** tab, on the ribbon, in the **Template** group, click **Base Templates**.

3. In the **Base Templates** dialog box, select the base templates you want to use, and click **OK**.
