# Sitecore blob storage

BLOB is an acronym for Binary Large Objects, and blob storage is a way of storing the unstructured data of highly scalable objects, (for example, media items).

Use the Sitecore blob storage documentation to gain an overview of [how Sitecore media items use blob storage](https://doc.sitecore.com/xp/en/developers/105/sitecore-experience-manager/blob-storage-and-sitecore-media-items.html "Blob storage and Sitecore media items"), how you can [enable Azure blob storage for Sitecore blobs](https://doc.sitecore.com/xp/en/developers/105/sitecore-experience-manager/enable-the-azure-blob-storage-module-for-sitecore-blobs.html "Enable the Azure Blob Storage module for Sitecore blobs"), and how to migrate blobs from SQL Database to Azure Storage [using the blob migration tool](https://doc.sitecore.com/xp/en/developers/105/sitecore-experience-manager/use-the-blob-migration-tool.html "Use the blob migration tool").

Before you install blob storage, work through the [considerations for using blob storage](https://doc.sitecore.com/xp/en/developers/105/sitecore-experience-manager/considerations-for-using-the-azure-blob-storage-module.html "Considerations for using the Azure Blob Storage module").

If you have already installed the blob storage module, refer to the [Troubleshooting blob storage](https://doc.sitecore.com/xp/en/developers/105/sitecore-experience-manager/troubleshooting-blob-storage.html "Troubleshooting blob storage") topic to understand blob storage limitations, security, and performance.

> [!note]
> After you enable Azure blob storage, a blob ID is automatically assigned to [media items](https://doc.sitecore.com/xp/en/developers/105/sitecore-experience-manager/blob-storage-and-sitecore-media-items.html "Blob storage and Sitecore media items").
