# Validate items based on a data template

To validate data entered into all items based on a data template, configure [validation rules](https://doc.sitecore.com/xp/en/developers/105/sitecore-experience-manager/validation-rules-and-options.html "Validation rules and options") in the [standard values](https://doc.sitecore.com/xp/en/developers/105/sitecore-experience-manager/standard-values-for-data-template-fields.html "Standard values for data template fields") for the template.

To configure default validation for all items based on a data template:

1. In the Template Manager or the Content Editor, select the data template and, on the **Configure** tab, in the **Template** group, click **Edit**.
2. On the **Builder** tab, click **Builder OPTIONS**.
3. On the ribbon, in the **Template** group, click **Standard values**.

    If the standard values item does not exist, Sitecore inserts a standard values item under the data template item.

4. On the **View** tab, select the **Standard fields** check box.
5. On the **Content** tab, in the **Validation Rules** section, select **Validation rules**.
6. Hide the standard template fields.
