# Processing

Processing refers to the analysis of collected data, and is performed by Processing servers. Processing includes the following activities:

- [Contact processing](https://doc.sitecore.com/xp/en/developers/105/sitecore-experience-platform/contact-processing.html "Contact processing")
- Historical re-aggregation (‘[rebuilding the reporting database](https://doc.sitecore.com/xp/en/developers/105/sitecore-experience-platform/rebuild-the-reporting-database.html "Rebuild the reporting database")‘)
- Maintenance of the reporting database
- Distributed processing (for example, allowing scheduled tasks to execute on the processing server)

Aggregation is specific to the grouping of interaction data. Contacts are processed, not aggregated.

> As of Sitecore 9.0, Processing servers are not responsible for indexing contact and interaction data. Indexing is performed by the [xConnect Search Indexer](https://doc.sitecore.com/xp/en/developers/105/sitecore-experience-platform/the-xdb-search-index.html "The xDB search index").
