| Configuration file | `c:\path\to\sitecore\root\App_Config\Sitecore\Marketing.Tracking\Sitecore.Analytics.Tracking.configc:\path\to\sitecore\root\App_Config\Sitecore\Marketing.Xdb.ReferenceData.Client\Sitecore.Xdb.ReferenceData.Client.config` |

The `GetOperationTimeout` setting applies when the tracker uses the xConnect Client API to GET a contact or device profile - for example, at the start of a session.

> [!important]
> This setting is internal to the tracker and does not apply when you use the xConnect Client API in your own code. You can [specify a timeout per request when using the xConnect Client API directly](https://doc.sitecore.com/xp/en/developers/91/sitecore-experience-platform/en/configuring-xconnect-client-api-timeouts.html).

```xml
<dataAdapterManager defaultProvider="xconnect">
        <providers>
            <clear/>
            <add name="xconnect" type="Sitecore.Analytics.XConnect.DataAccess.XConnectDataAdapterProvider, Sitecore.Analytics.XConnect">
                <GetOperationTimeout>0.`00:00`:05</GetOperationTimeout>
            </add>
        </providers>
    </dataAdapterManager>
```
