# Versioning

In the Content Editor or the Experience Editor, you can add new versions of any item, and you can add as many versions as you like.

There are two types of versions:

- **Numbered versions** – versions of an item in the same language.

    For example, you can add a second version of your products page that you can use during a special promotion. You can also add a new version of an image and change the new version to fit the promotion and then change it back to the original version after the promotion.

- **Language versions** – versions of an item in a different language.

    For example, for an item in Danish, you can add an English version of the same item. In this case, you should also add additional versions of the images of the item, if you want to display the alternative text in both languages.

## Add a numbered version of an item

To add a new numbered version of an item:

1. In the Content Editor or the Experience Editor, navigate to the item or page that you want to add a new version to.
2. On the ribbon, on the **Versions** tab, in the **Versions** group, click **Add**.

    - In the Content Editor, in the upper-right corner of the editing pane, you can see the item’s latest version number. In this example, version number two:

        > To view another version of the item, click the version number drop-down menu and click another version.

    - In the Experience Editor, in the **Versions** group, the version number of the current page is on the **Versions** button. In this example, version number two:

        > To view another version of the item, click Versions and from the menu click another version.

3. Make the relevant changes to the new version and save your changes.

## Add a new language version of an item

To add a new language version of an item:

1. In the Content Editor or Experience Editor, navigate to the item or page that you want to add a language version to.
2. To select the language that you want the new version to be in, on the **Versions** tab, in the **Language** group, click **Change the current language** ![ED8806B02C0044B0998698C695955ED6.png](https://doc.sitecore.com/api/markdown-image/xp/en/users/100/sitecore-experience-platform/images/ED8806B02C0044B0998698C695955ED6.png), and then click the relevant language.

    > If the language that you want is not in the drop-down list, click More languages, and in the Select Language dialog box, click the relevant language and click OK.

3. To add a new version of the item in the selected language:
    - In the Content Editor, in the notification that appears, click **Add a new version**.

    - In the Experience Editor, on the **Versions** tab, in the **Versions** group, click **Add**.
4. Save your changes.

## Remove a version of an item

To remove a version of an item:

1. In the Content Editor or the Experience Editor, navigate to the version of the item or page that you want to remove. Make sure that you select the relevant language and numbered version.
2. To remove:
    - The selected item version, on the ribbon, on the **Versions** tab, in the **Versions** group, click **Remove**.
    - All the versions of an item in the current language, click the **Remove** drop-down arrow, and then click **Remove all versions**.

    > [!note]
    > If there is only one language version of the item, this does not remove the item itself. Instead, in the Content Editor a notification appears on the item, to let you know that there is no version of the item available. In the Experience Editor, the version number on the Versions button changes to zero.
