# Set which renderings are allowed in a placeholder

You can use placeholder settings to restrict the renderings that can be added to placeholders. If you are using placeholder settings and you create a new rendering, you must update the settings for placeholders where you want to use the new rendering.

To allow renderings for a placeholder:

1. In the Content Editor, in the *sitecore/Layout/Placeholder Settings* folder, select the placeholder where you want to use the new rendering.

For example, select the *content* placeholder that is installed with Sitecore by default.

2. In the **Data** section, in the **Allowed Controls** field, click **Edit**.

3. In the **Select Items** dialog, use the double-arrows to move each rendering that you want to allow into the right pane.

4. Click **OK** and save the item.
