Monitoring application performance with Application Map

Current version: 10.3
Note

This topic is only applicable to Managed Cloud Standard solutions deployed with Azure App Services (PaaS).

The Application Map is a feature of Application Insights that identifies and maps interactions and relationships between applications and the underlying infrastructure. It visualizes the devices on the network to help you spot performance bottlenecks or failure hotspots across all components of your distributed application. Each node on the map represents an application component or its dependencies.

By default, the Application Map feature in the Application Insights service is not enabled when Sitecore is deployed to Microsoft Azure App Service (Web Apps).

Enabling the Application Map doesn't incur additional costs. However, the Application Map will contribute to the total data volume collected and stored by Application Insights, which can affect the overall cost of the service. For more information, see Microsoft's Azure Monitor pricing page.

For more information about the Application Map, see Microsoft's Application Map documentation.

Enabling the Application Map

Note

To enable the Application Map, you must have Sitecore version 10.0.0 or later.

In the Sitecore Support Portal, there are two ways to enable the Application Map:

  • Creating a Cloud service request item called Enable application performance monitoring with Application Map.

    Note

When the Sitecore support team enables the Application Map, the web app will experience minimal downtime.

  • When creating a Create New Environment service request item, in the Provision add-ons section, selecting the Enable application performance monitoring with Application Map check box.
