Assign a profile card with an individual item or multiple items

Current version: 10.1

You create profile cards to save combinations of profile keys and values that you apply to your content. You can use profile cards to assign standardized profile values to items across your website.

Although you can assign profile cards to items in the Experience Editor, if you manage a large website, associating a profile to all the pages of your website can be a huge task. To address this, marketing definition mapping provides the tools you need to assign profiles to pages of your website quickly and efficiently using global rules that are run with each request made to your website. For this reason, you must carefully plan how you are going to use the marketing definition mapping rules to ensure that the overall performance of your website is not impacted.

Marketing definition mapping rules are evaluated before personalization rules and, as a result, the personalization rules have the most recent profile data that includes updates made by the marketing definition mapping rules.

Important

Marketing definition mapping is only available when you have Sitecore XP with tracking enabled.

Assign a profile card to an individual item

To assign a profile card to an item:

  1. In the Experience Editor, go to the page that you want to associate a profile card with.

  2. On the Optimization tab, in Profile Settings group, click the Associate profile cards hyperlink. The Profile Cards dialog box opens.

  3. In the Profile Cards dialog box, click Edit next to the profile that you are interested in. The Select Profile Card dialog box opens.

The Select Profile Card dialog box looks different depending on which option you selected in the Authoring Selection field when you created your profile cards. You can find the Authoring Selection field on the Content tab, in the Data section.

The options in the Authoring Selection field are:

    • Single - you can assign only one profile card per item. When you choose this option, the Select Profile Card dialog box looks like this:

    • Multiple - you can assign several profile cards per item. When you choose this option, the Select Profile Card dialog box looks like this:

Select Profile Card dialog box with the Multiple Authoring Selection setting.
    • Multiple with Percentages - you can assign several profile cards to each content item and assign percentages to each profile card. When you choose this option, the Select Profile Card dialog box looks like this:

  4. In the Select Profile Cards dialog box, in the Profile Cards field, select the profile card that you want to associate with this content item. The profile values that you gave to this card are assigned to the current content item.

    • If you selected the Multiple option, select all the profile cards that you want to assign to this content item. When you have finished, click Add.

    • If you selected the Multiple with Percentages option, in the drop-down box for each profile card, select the percentage of importance/relevance that you want to assign to each profile card.

    • The sum of the percentages that you select must be 100%.

Select Profile Cards for sum of percentages.
  5. After you have assigned profile cards to the item, click OK. The Profile Cards dialog box shows the changes you have made.

  7. Click OK to save.

Assign a profile card to multiple items

You can assign a profile card to multiple items using rules. For example, you can assign a profile card based on the hierarchy of your site by selecting where the item is the specific item or one of its descendants. Or, you can assign a profile card to pages with specific tags by selecting where a specific tag is assigned to an item. In the following example, when you click the tag hyperlink, the Select a tag dialog box opens where you can search for and select the tag you want to use.

Important

For Item Hierarchy conditions, there must be a context item present in the request. For all requests that do not have a context item, this set of conditions returns false and the selected action is not run for the specific rule.

To assign a profile card to multiple items:

  1. On the Sitecore Launchpad, click Marketing Control Panel and, in the content tree, go to Marketing Control Panel\Marketing Definition Mapping\Rules.

  2. Right-click Rules, click Insert, Rule, enter a name for the rule in the Message dialog box, and click OK.

  3. On the Content tab, in the Data section, click Edit rule,

  4. In the Create rule dialog box, in the Choose conditions box, click the conditions you want to use.

  5. In the Choose actions box, click the action Apply profile cards: cards.

    Create rule dialog box
  6. In the Edit rule box, click the hyperlinks to define the rule definition.

  7. To select the profile cards you want to apply, click cards and, in the Select profile cards dialog box, double-click the profile cards you want to assign so they are added to the Selected list.

    Warning

Ensure there are no folders under the Profile Cards item. The Apply profile card action does not support an item hierarchy.

    Select profile cards dialog box.
    Note

If the profile card assignment option (Authoring Selection) is set to:

    • Single - you can only select one profile card.

    • Multiple - you can select more than one profile card.

    • Multiple with percentage - you can select more than one profile card; however, the scores are calculated in the same manner as for the Multiple setting (in order words, equally divided across profile cards).

  8. Click OK to close the Select profile cards dialog box and click OK to close the Create rule dialog box.

Important

If you have already assigned profile cards to content on the website, you can change the assignment by modifying the web.config file on the CD instance. The marketingProfileAssignment rule supports the following values:

  • Both (default)  - both the Tracking field and the marketing rules are processed.

  • TrackingFieldOnly - only the marketing definitions assigned with the Tracking field are processed. Marketing rules are ignored.

  • RulesOnly - only the marketing rules are processed. The Tracking field assignments are ignored.
