1. Get acquainted with the changes in Sitecore XP

Before you upgrade to the new version of Sitecore XP, you must ensure that you meet the software and hardware requirements for this new version.

For more information about the requirements, see the Installation Guide.

SQL Server

Before you upgrade the databases, you must ensure that your SQL Server installation is compatible with the new version of Sitecore XP.

If your current version of SQL Server is not compatible, you must upgrade to a compatible version of SQL Server before you upgrade or deploy the Sitecore databases.

Solr

Ensure you have a compatible version of Solr. For more information, see the Solr compatibility table.

When you deploy the Sitecore XP – XP Single topology – in a local development environment, the Solr server and all the required cores and configurations are installed.

If you use SolrCloud, add the authentication for SolrCloud to the appropriate connection strings.

xDB data migration from Sitecore XP 8.x

Important

If you are upgrading from Sitecore XP 8.1.0 – 8.2.7, you must read this section.

If you are upgrading from Sitecore XP 9.X or later, skip this step.

In Sitecore XP 9.0.0, we introduced a new data model for the Experience Database (xDB). You must therefore use the xDB Data Migration Tool to convert all the data in the MongoDB database to the new format. The xDB Data Migration Tool only supports migrating data to Sitecore XP 10.0.1.

You can choose one of these options:

  • If you do not want to keep your xDB data, you do not have to use the xDB Data Migration Tool. You can continue using Sitecore Experience Database (xDB) without your xDB data.

    Continue with the current guide.

  • If you want to keep your xDB data, you must first upgrade to Sitecore XP 10.0.1 and then use the xDB Data Migration Tool to migrate your data. After you have migrated your xDB data to Sitecore XP 10.0.1, you can upgrade to the latest Sitecore XP.

MongoDB

The MongoDB provider is no longer supported for the Collection database. If you use MongoDB now and want to upgrade to a later version of Sitecore, please familiarize yourself with the data migration options that are available.
