Prequalifying promotions
You can prequalify promotions before they are evaluated in order to reduce the evaluation workload. The following table details the available filters.
Filter |
Requirement |
---|---|
Approval status |
The promotion approval status is equal to approved, and has not been disabled. |
Date range |
The promotion from and to date range is valid. |
Catalog |
The promotion book is associated with the same catalog as items in the shopper's cart. |
Items |
The promotion's included items match items in the user's cart. The promotion's excluded items exclude the promotion from evaluation if they match any items in the user's cart. |
Promotion exclusivity |
An exclusive promotion excludes all other promotions and takes precedence over the promotion priority. Where there are multiple exclusive promotions, they are ordered by priority, then sorted by valid from date, and finally by date created. After which, only the first exclusive promotion is applied per cart. |
To ensure your promotional strategy is implemented properly, it is important to understand how promotions are applied, and in what order.
-
Promotions at the cart line level are applied before promotions at the cart level. Promotion priority does not impact this order. However, inside each cart line or cart group, promotions are ordered by priority. Promotions (including automatic, coupon, and exclusive) are calculated for each cart line item, then promotions (including automatic, coupon, and exclusive) are calculated for the cart.
-
Promotions are applied in order of priority with the higher priority being applied first. The highest priority is 1. Promotions with the same priority are ordered and applied according to date. The default promotion priority applied to new or migrated promotions is defined in the GlobalPromotionsPolicy.
-
Promotions where all actions are at the cart line level are applied first, followed by promotions where at least one action is at the cart line level and, finally, promotions with all actions at the cart level are applied. Promotion priority does not change this.
-
Automatic promotions are applied before coupon promotions.
-
Multiple automatic promotions are applied in order by valid-from date (oldest first).
-
Multiple coupons are applied in the order they were added to the cart.
-
If multiple exclusive promotions apply to a particular cart line or cart, the first promotion found is applied (found in order by valid-from date). Only one exclusive promotion is applied per cart.
Calculation examples
The following table provides calculation examples.
The cart total is recalculated for each cart line as soon as the promotion is applied. This means that a promotion might not apply if the recalculated cart line total falls below the minimum value required.
Example |
Promotions (in the order calculated) |
Result |
---|---|---|
1 |
|
15% off Cart Line 1 list price. 15% off Cart Line 2 list price. Shipping is free (if the cart’s calculated sell price exceeds $100). |
2 |
With a $10.00 product in the cart:
|
$5 off Cart 1 list price. Cart totals are re-calculated after each line and since the first offer reduces the cart total to $5, the customer is no longer eligible for the second offer. |
3 |
|
5% off Cart Line 1 list price. Only one exclusive promotion is applied per cart. |
4 |
|
20% off Cart Line 2 list price. Shipping is free (if the cart’s calculated sell price exceeds $100). |
