Working with submit actions

You use the Submit button for navigation (previous and next buttons), to submit a form, and to trigger submit actions. In the Form designer, the Submit button is located in the Structure section of the Form elements pane. Drag a Submit button element onto the canvas and, on the General tab, you can name it, style it, and determine what happens after clicking the button. The navigation steps are Submit, Previous, or Next. Then you can assign one or more submit actions.

You can assign default submit actions to all submit buttons, whether they are actually submitting the form or whether they are used for navigation.  You can also create a custom submit action.


If you add more than one submit action, the order is important. The submit actions are executed in the order they are added to the submit button. The Redirect to page and the Redirect to URL actions abort the execution of subsequent steps. For example, if you place a redirect action before a save action, the form data might not be saved.

By default, you can add the following actions to submit buttons.

Trigger Goal

Use the Trigger Goal submit action to select a new or preset goal. For example, when the visitor, clicks the Submit button the Brochures Request goal is activated and points are accumulated for content profiling.


This submit action is not available in CMS-only mode.

Redirect URL

Use the Redirect URL submit action to redirect a visitor to an external URL.

The following URL parameters are available.




Enter the URL prefixed with web protocols (http:// or https://).

Displays a preview for the URL.

URL parameter

You can pass on form data to a URL as parameters. For example, if you want to redirect to a thank-you page and summarize the visitor's contact details. Or, for example, if you have a product search form that navigates to an external website and you want to pass on the search text from the form to the URL.

Click Add parameter to add URL parameters. In the Parameter field, enter the key of the URL parameter. In the Form Field, select the field. The Redirect to URL submit action retrieves the field value and generates the final URL. You can preview the generated URL from the URL Preview input box. Click x to remove the parameter.

Trigger Campaign Activity

Use the Trigger Campaign Activity submit action to select a preset campaign activity. Select the campaign activity that should be triggered when the button is clicked.


This submit action is not available in CMS-only mode.

Trigger Outcome

Use the Trigger Outcome submit activity to select an outcome type.


This submit action is not available in CMS-only mode.

Send Email

Use the Send Email submit action to create an email message to send when the Submit button is clicked.

The following fields are available.



Address Fields

Allows you to enter email addresses. The address fields (To, CC, Bcc) can contain a form email field (such as primary email address) or you can enter an email address. Available fields are displayed in an auto-complete list once you start to type the field name. The From field values are retrieved from the address book items defined.


Allows you to enter the subject. You can also use the Insert Field button to add a field contained in your form.


Allows you to specify the body of the email message. You can use the toolbar buttons to apply formatting to the text and click the Insert Field button to add a field contained in your form.


The Link button and Image button available on the Message formatting toolbar are not linked to Sitecore. This means that links and images are not automatically updated.

Send Email Campaign Message

Use the Send Email Campaign Message submit action to select the email campaign message that should be sent when the button is clicked.


This submit action is only available when the Email Experience Manager (EXM) is installed.

Redirect to Page

Use the Redirect to Page submit action to redirect the visitor to a web page.

Save Data

Use the Save Data submit action to save form data to the database. If you want to save the form data of a multipage form, the location of the SaveData submit action is important. The SaveData submit action saves form data from the form's first page up to the page where the submit action is added. For example, if you have a multipage form of five pages and add the SaveData submit action to page 3, the action saves posted data for pages 1, 2, and 3 only. To save posted data of all pages, you must add the Save Data submit action to the last page of the form.
