Disaster Recovery for PaaS 2.0

Version: 10.3

Disaster recovery allows an organization to maintain or quickly resume mission-critical functions following a disaster that requires manual intervention. The disaster recovery services for Managed Cloud PaaS 2.0 (DR 2.0) are available to support the recovery of your Production environment in the event of an Azure Region outage. DR 2.0 is available as an add-on purchase for Managed Cloud PaaS 2.0.

Sitecore Managed Cloud Disaster Recovery 2.0 supports the same topologies and tiers that are available for Managed Cloud Standard PaaS 2.0 (see KB01003039), and Managed Cloud Premium PaaS 2.0 (see KB01003040). When you ask Sitecore to deploy a disaster recovery environment, the Azure services and SKUs will be scaled to match the tiers and specifications previously defined within the Primary environment. Sitecore will then bring the DR environment into operation. Failback to the Production environment will only be possible when all services in the previously impacted region are back online. Sitecore will initiate the failback process at your request.

This topic describes the disaster recovery region support and architecture. For more information about DR 2.0, see the following topics:

Azure Region support

Sitecore follows Microsoft's guidance for Azure Region Pairs. Your DR region will be predetermined by your Primary region selection. Refer to the following KB article for a list of Managed Cloud PaaS 2.0 supported Azure regions: KB0206155.

Talk to your Sitecore Account Executive if you need to deploy your Disaster Recovery environment to an alternative Azure region (a non-region pair). In certain circumstances, Sitecore will be able to provision your DR environment to this alternate location, provided the necessary Azure services are available within the desired Azure region, and on condition that the provisioning requests are not prohibited by Microsoft. Certain Azure regions require prior approval due to regional reservation policies. To request access to these regions, open a support request.

DR 2.0 architecture

The following diagram illustrates a standard/initial Disaster Recovery 2.0 deployment. This diagram should be considered the starting point for the Sitecore Managed Cloud DR 2.0 architecture. The DR architecture evolves as customer-implemented changes in the Production environment are deployed within the Disaster Recovery environment.

Standard Disaster Recovery 2.0 architecture

The primary region follows a Hub-spoke network architecture. This consists of Production and Non-production spokes, and a secondary region with a disaster recovery hub and a dedicated spoke for the disaster recovery environment.

Managed Cloud logical resource hierarchy

Sitecore Managed Cloud PaaS 2.0 includes the following logical resource hierarchy:

  • Azure Region - Primary region and Secondary region

    • Resource Group

      • Hub

        • Shared Azure Networking Services

      • Managed Cloud Spoke

        • Sitecore environments:

          • Production

          • Disaster Recovery

          • Non-production *

            • Pre-production*

            • QA*

            • Test*
