1. Configuring Managed Cloud PaaS

Scaling options for Managed Cloud PaaS

Version:

This topic describes the default settings applied to each Managed Cloud tier, and the options for scaling App services, SQL Elastic Pool, and Solr search.

Scale an App service

All app services in Sitecore Managed Cloud are hosted with a dedicated App Service plan. For example, if you deploy your Content Delivery (CD) and Content Management (CM) servers to Azure, this means both the CD and CM servers will each have one App Service plan plus one App Service.

There are two scaling options available on the Azure portal for an App Service plan:

  • Scale up (an App Service plan) – you can scale your price plan performance level up or down on demand, this includes the number of CPU Cores, RAM, storage, number of slots, and more.

  • Scale out (an App Service plan) – you can manually increase your number of instances (additional computers), or enable autoscaling, depending on CPU load, or based on your own performance rules.

    Note

Scale out is not supported for CM.

Scale SQL Elastic Pool

SQL vCore Elastic Pools on Azure are used to manage Sitecore databases in Managed Cloud, to provide consistent and predictable performance while leveraging the Azure cloud's robustness and security. These pools provide the flexibility to allocate and scale resources dynamically according to your specific workload needs.

As the volume of data or the number of users accessing the search system increases, it's necessary to scale Solr to maintain optimal performance and responsiveness. The table below shows the default Solr tiers used for the different Managed Cloud tiers. If necessary, you can request for the default Solr tier to be scaled up to meet additional Solr requests.

Solr tier properties

The table below describes the storage specifications for each of the Solr tiers. Each tier also includes a request / month limit entitlement. For example, the Medium Solr tier includes 50GB Storage capacity and supports up to a maximum of 10 million requests per month.
