Setting Sitecore XP to run in CMS-only mode without the xDB

Current version: 9.0

If you have used the Sitecore XP topology packages to install Sitecore XP, you can configure a server role to run in CMS-only mode by disabling the xDB and optionally the tracker.

You might want to disable the xDB and the tracker if:

  • There is an unexpected traffic spike.

  • You are upgrading from Sitecore XP 8.X to Sitecore XP 9.X.

  • You want to pause tracking and collection so that you can ensure that your implementation complies with privacy legislation.

  • You do not want to use the xDB.

    Note

If you have an Experience Management license, the xDB is automatically disabled. This is true even if you used the XP Scaled topology packages to deploy the Content Delivery and Content Management server roles.

Important

In Sitecore 9.1 and later, the XM Scaled topology packages do not include some Sitecore XP binaries and configuration files. You can not enable tracking and the xDB if you have used these packages to install Sitecore XM.

In Sitecore 9.0 and earlier, the XM Scaled topology packages are in CMS-only mode by default.
