Merchandising strategies

You can incorporate merchandising strategies into widget variation rules. They can include pinning, boosting, burying, and blacklisting products on your site.

Note

You can only set merchandising rules for preview search, search results, recommendation, email recommendation, and global widgets.

Pinning

Pinning forces a product or category to appear in a specific slot placement irrespective of whether the product or category exists in the natural results set for the rule context.

You can configure pinning in preview search, search results, recommendation, email recommendation, and global widgets.

Including

An include rule forces a list of products or categories to be part of the results irrespective of whether they are in the natural results for the context. With the include rule, you use a list-building workflow and target a specific slot.

You can only use including for a recommendation widget.

Boosting

Use boost to move a product or category from a lower rank to a higher rank. A boosting rule forces a list of products or categories to appear in specific slots as long as the listed products and categories appear in the natural results set for the context. Similar to the include rule, you use a list-building workflow that targets a specific slot.

You can use boosting in preview search, search results, recommendation, email recommendation, and global widgets.

Burying

Burying is the opposite of boosting. Use burying to move products and categories within the natural results set for a rule context to the bottom of the list. You use a list-building workflow but do not have to target a specific slot.

You can use burying in preview search, search results, recommendation, email recommendation, and global widgets.

Tip

Use burying when you still want items to appear, but at the very bottom of the result.

Blacklisting

Use blacklisting to stop products from appearing in the natural results set for a rule context. With blacklisting, you use the list-building workflow to create a list of products or categories to blacklist, but you do not want to target a specific slot.

You can use blacklisting in preview search, search results, recommendation, email recommendation, and global widgets.

Tip

Use blacklisting when you want a list of items to never appear in search results.
