Media items
In Sitecore, there is a difference between media files and media items. An image or video file that is stored on your computer is called a media file. When you upload the media file to the Media library, the file is attached to a media item and is from then on referred to as a media item.
A media item can be an image, a document, a video, or an audio file. It is composed of several fields and it always has a file attached to the Media field.
Media items can be:
-
Images — .jpeg, .jpg, .gif, .png, .svg, .bmp, .webp, and other formats.
-
Microsoft Word documents — .doc and .docx files.
-
.pdf documents.
-
Videos — .mpeg, .wmv, and other formats.
-
Audio files — .mp3 and other audio formats.
You can store and manage your media items in the Media library.
When opening the Media library in Forms to select a media item, only the items in the following formats are available for use: .jpeg, .gif, .png, and .webp.
When opening the Media library in the Page builder to select a media item, only the items in the following formats are available for use: .jpeg, .jpg, .gif, .png, .svg, .bmp, .webp, .pdf, .doc, and .docx.
To include the other types of media items (such as videos) in a page, use the Content Editor, or make your files available as external links.
Media items published from the Media library through Experience Edge are delivered via public CDN URLs, making them suitable for public-facing content. Content that requires restricted access, such as intranet assets, requires a different delivery approach.
