Assign a page design to a template

Page designs are assigned to data templates to create page templates. Page templates are in turn used to create pages with a specific design in your site.

In the page builder, a data template is available out of the box in the Templates mode. You can duplicate this data template and assign each one a different page design.

Note

Ask your XM Cloud administrator or developer to create additional data templates in the Content Editor.

Before you create a webpage, we recommend you associate a page design with that template, so any new pages based on the template have the content structure and layout defined in the page design.

Assign an existing page design

To assign an existing page design to a template:

  1. In the page builder Templates mode, on the Page templates tab, click for an existing template, then click Duplicate in the drop-down menu.

  2. Give the new template a name, then click Duplicate.

  3. To assign a page design to the template, click in the Page design column.

  4. In the Page dialog, click the page design you want to use for the template, and click Save.

Note

In the Pages template table, you can see how many pages are already built using a particular template.

Assign a new page design

To assign a new page design to a template:

  1. In the page builder Templates mode, on the Page designs tab, click Create > Page design.

  2. In the Create page design dialog, enter a name for your page design and click Create.

  3. To assign the page design to an existing template, click Assign now.

  4. To assign the page design to an existing template, click Assign existing.

To assign the page design to a copy of an existing template, click Copy existing.

  5. In the drop down menu, click the name of the template you want to use.

    • If the template you want to use has already a page design assigned to it, the new page design will replace the one currently assigned.

    • If you want to use a copy of an existing template, you can rename the copy.

  6. To set the template insert options, click Next.

  7. On the Parent of tab, you can choose what kind of templates can be created under the new page template.

    • Click Allow all templates to be able to use all possible page templates as children of the new page template.

    • Click Choose specific templates to select which page templates can be used as children of the new template.

  8. On the Child of tab, you can choose under which templates the new page template will be available. By default, all possible page templates are selected to be parent of the new page template.

  9. Click Finish to start working on the new page design.

Depending on the options you have chosen, the new page design is assigned to a new page template, or it replaces a previous design in an existing page template. Click Details to see the list of page templates using that page design.

Note

The insert options you define on the Parent of and Child of are applied to all sites of the site collection, whereas assigning a page design to a page template is only valid for the site you are working on.
