1. Working with the Page builder

Editing in the Page builder

The Page builder is a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) application where you can create new pages for your website, as well as edit existing pages.

The Page builder combines editing and design capabilities for building and publishing web pages, letting several users work simultaneously on the same content.

Concurrent editing

The Page builder is designed to let various users work simultaneously on the same content. In the Page builder, the tracking of changes happens at the field level:

  • If user A edits field 1, and user B edits field 2 on the same page, both changes can be automatically saved without any issues.

  • If user A and user B both edit the same field on the same page, you get the following notification: The item has been modified. The changes cannot be saved. Do you want to overwrite other changes?. Click Overwrite to overwrite the changes made on this field by another user, or in another tab of a browser.

  • All layout changes in the same page (such as adding, removing, or rearranging components, or changing the data source for a component) are considered as changes of the same item. In this case, all users working on the page will get the following notification: The item has been modified. Reload the item to see the latest changes.

These notifications are usually displayed when the page that is currently open in your browser has been modified by another user, but they can also show if you yourself have modified the page in a different tab of the browser. In both cases, to ensure that you work on an updated page that includes all latest changes, as well as to avoid overwriting any new changes, refresh the page when you see the notification and before you continue editing.

Shared editing

In the Page builder, there are three ways to ensure that a change you make on one page propagates to the other version of the pages:

  • Partial and page designs – editing in a design in the Page builder Templates mode will apply the change to all pages already built with that design, including pages that might already be online.

  • Shared layout – in Editor mode, turn on the  Shared layout  switch to ensure that the edits you make to the layout of a page (such as adding, removing, reordering, or configuring components) are shared by all versions of that page. This means that the layout will be altered on all the language versions and the numbered versions of the page, including the versions previously approved in cases where an approval workflow is assigned to the site.

    Note

It is best to use the Shared layout feature in the early stages of page building, so you can build a page once before turning off the feature to make layout tweaks for specific language versions. This ensures that the page can be adapted to different languages while maintaining a consistent design.

  • Shared fields – page content fields labeled as shared are shared by all versions of the page in all languages. This can be, for example, the settings for the sitemap. Editing fields labeled as versioned means that the changes you make only apply to the page currently open in the canvas. Unversioned fields only apply to numbered versions of that page, but not the language versions.

Autosaving, undoing, redoing, previewing and publishing

The Page builder saves your changes automatically at regular intervals, or when you click away from the field that you are editing.

You can undo your edits, or reinstate undone changes .

You can also preview your webpage in a separate page of your browser by clicking Preview .

When you create new pages or edit existing pages in the Page builder, you must publish your changes so they appear on your website. This lets you save unfinished items and decide exactly when your changes appear on the website.

Note

You can publish pages from the Page builder Editor mode, but some of the elements included in the page have to be published from the app where they were created and edited:

  • Page and partial designs must be published from the Page builder Templates mode.

  • Content items must be published from Explorer or the Content Editor.

  • Low code components and styles must be published from the Component builder.
