Define error pages for a site

It is best practice to configure dedicated error pages for your site. By customizing error pages with your logo, colors, and design elements, you maintain a consistent brand identity, building trust and credibility with your audience. Custom error pages can provide alternative navigation options or a search field yo your website's visitors. For example, custom error pages can include calls to action, links to popular content, or promotional messages. This turns a potential negative experience into an opportunity to engage users and drive conversions. In addition, by keeping visitors engaged on your site, you reduce bounce rate and improve overall site performance, maintaining your site's SEO health.

The most common error pages are:

  • 404 Page not found - this error occurs when the server cannot find the requested resource. It typically means the URL is incorrect or the page has been moved or deleted.

  • 500 Internal server error - this error indicates a problem on the server side. It means the server encountered an unexpected condition that prevented it from fulfilling the request.

If you do not configure error pages in Channels, or in the Content Editor, the default error pages of the front-end application used to render your site on the web will be shown instead.

To configure error pages in the Channels:

  1. In the page builder, create 404 and 500 error pages for the site.

  2. In Channels, click the Options menu for the desired site.

  3. In the left-hand pane, click Error pages.

  4. In the 404 Page not found drop-down list, click on the page you created for 404 errors.

  5. In the 500 Internal server error drop-down list, click on the page you created for 500 errors.

  6. Click Save and Publish the site with subitems.
