1. Create and manage sites

Publish and unpublish a site

To make your site available publicly, it needs to be published. Publishing a site means that the site pages and their related content items become available on the Experience Edge delivery platform, where they can be consumed and rendered by your front-end application.

Note

Some components use mapped data that is fetched from a data source. You don't need to publish data sources to make them publicly available.

After a site has been published, it can be unpublished.

Alternatively, to ensure that only sites with content are published, you can also exclude non-content sites from publication.

Publish a site

If your site is configured to have a publication workflow, you need to approve the different states of the workflow before the Publish button becomes available. Similarly, the various items included in the site need to be available for publishing and in the latest state of workflow to be published.

To publish a site:

  1. In the navigation menu, click Content > Explorer.

  2. Click the tile for the site you want to publish.

  3. In the right-hand editor pane, click Publish.

  4. In the Publish dialog, select the publishing mode for publishing the website:

    • Smart Publish – publishes all items that have changed since the last publication.

    • Republish – publishes everything. Republish overwrites every item in the publishing target, even if it has not changed.

  5. Click Publish subitems to publish all the site's subitems.

  6. In the Languages to publish section, select the language versions that you want to publish.

  7. Click Publish.

The site is now available on Experience Edge and a front-end application can fetch and render it publicly.

Unpublish a site, or exclude a site from publication

To unpublish a website, you need to set up restrictions for the entire website, then publish it. Publishing a site under restriction will remove the site content from Experience Edge. You can also exclude a site from being published using the same procedure.

To unpublish a site or exclude it from publication:

  1. In the Content Editor, navigate to the site you want to unpublish or exclude from publication.

  2. On the Publish tab, in the Restrictions group, click Change.

  3. In the Publishing Settings dialog, click the Item tab.

  4. To specify the site as not publishable, clear the Publishable check box, then click OK.

  5. To exclude a site from being published, you can close the Publishing Settings dialog.

  6. To unpublish a previously published site, Republish the site with the new restriction settings.
