Allocate traffic and assign to variants of a web experiment with unique assignment

Sitecore Personalize lets you control the flow of guest traffic into an experiment running a classic A/B test by allocating traffic and assigning it to variants. With the Unique assignment method, these are determined using percentages. By default, Sitecore Personalize allocates 100% of traffic to the experiment, but you can adjust this to fit your experiment's requirements. After you've allocated traffic, you can distribute it among variants by assigning a percentage to each one.

Important

We recommend that you familiarize yourself with both the Unique and Universal assignment methods, as they offer different approaches for allocating traffic and assigning it to variants.

To allocate traffic and assign to variants:

  1. In the Experiment options pane, in the Statistical engine section, click the Classic option to select a classic A/B test.

The Experiment options pane lets you select the statistical engine and assignment method, and edit the traffic allocation.
    Note

Selecting the Optimized option activates optimized testing, which prevents you from selecting the Unique and Universal assignment methods or adjusting how you allocate traffic. This option will automatically allocate 100% of the traffic to your experiment, and dynamically assign guests to the highest performing variants.

  2. In the Assignment method section, click the Unique to experiment option, then in the Traffic allocation section, click Edit icon.

  3. In the Allocate traffic pane, drag the slider to set the percentage of overall guest traffic that you want to include in the experiment. For example, setting this to 20% means one in five guests will enter the experiment.

  4. Click Save.

  5. On the experiment builder, in the Experiment variants section, click Edit icon next to the percentage of any of the variants.

  6. In the Assign traffic to variants pane, enter the percentage of traffic for each variant using whole, rounded percentages. Ensure the total percentage for all variants equals 100%.

The Assign traffic to variants pane is used to distribute the allocated traffic to experiment variants using percentages.
    Important

The traffic assigned to variants is probabilistic, which means that the actual number of sessions per variant might not match the set percentages precisely. For instance, in a split of 50-50% across two variants over 100,000 sessions, the session count for each might not be exactly 50,000. However, as the sample size increases, the distribution will more closely reflect your set percentages.

  7. Optionally, to distribute the allocated traffic equally among variants, click Assign traffic equally to all variants.

  8. Click Save.
